A Layman’s Guide to Centralized Air Conditioning

Article By MG Cooling Solutions In HVAC - September 2, 2020

What is centralized air conditioning?

Centralized air conditioners are mostly used in malls, offices, theatres, and places where large crowds gather. The device circulates cool air with the help of supply and return channels. Registers and supply ducts extensively include openings in the ceiling, wall or floor that remain hidden under grills. The supply ducts and registers transmit the cooled air from ac to the room. The cooled air turns warmer as it flows through the room; then it circulates back to the central ac via registers and returns ducts.

How does it work?

Air conditioners are similar to refrigerators. It implements the evaporation process of a refrigerant, like Puron, to offer cooling services. The warm air prevailing within a room is sucked first by a grille located at the base of the machine. A central air conditioning system aids in both heating and cooling of air. Additionally, it maintains the moisture level of the room and cleans the air thoroughly. Centralized air conditioners assist in dehumidifying the incoming air. However, if the climate is excessively humid or if the air conditioner is larger in size, it might fail to reach a lower level of humidity. In such a scenario, dehumidifiers come to the rescue. A dehumidifier in an air conditioned space will surge the energy consumption, since the dehumidifier will require a huge amount of power to run. Also, the air conditioner will be needing more capacity to cool the room. Another option could be the application of a dehumidifying heat pipe that can be used as a substitute to most existing devices.

Types of centralized air conditioners

Centralized air conditioners can be of two types, a packaged unit and a split-system unit. A packaged centralized air conditioner has the condenser, compressor, and evaporator, all assembled in a single cabinet. They are usually located on the terrace or on a slab attached to the residence. In case of a split-system central air conditioner, there is an indoor metal cabinet and an outdoor metal cabinet. The outdoor cabinet comprises the compressor and condenser, and the indoor cabinet comprises the evaporator.

Tips for the users

It is advised that if you are using a centralized air conditioner at your home, keep the auto mode on. The auto mode ensures shutting down the fan along with the compressor. To be more precise, avoid using the device’s central fan to allow air circulation. Instead, use a circulating fan in each room.
