The role of HVAC Consultancy Company is to do the right calculations for energy efficient HVAC Projects. One of the factors to do is by calculating occupancy, i.e. the number of people presents inside the facility. HVAC (Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning) are present in every kind of building. Most of the HVAC Consulting Companies do engineering to air condition the area assuming maximum occupancy rather than actual usage. As a result, HVAC facilities are often over-conditioned needlessly. Thus, in order to achieve efficient air conditioning, HVAC Consulting Companies must require knowledge of occupancy.

Technologies advancement for HVAC Consultancy Companies

This article by MG Cooling Solutions ( An HVAC Company) shows how real-time occupancy data from a wireless sensor network can be used to create occupancy models, which in turn can be integrated into building conditioning system for usage-based demand control conditioning strategies. Using strategies based on sensor network occupancy model predictions, we show that it is possible to achieve 42% annual energy savings while still maintaining American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) comfort standards.

Studies suggest that 15% to 25% of HVAC energy can be saved by setting ventilation rates based on actual occupancy. Currently, the majority of HVAC Consultancy Companies condition rooms assuming maximum occupancy during normal working hours and are turned off at night. This leads to inefficiency as rooms are often conditioned to levels that are not appropriate for the number of occupants actually occupying the areas.

Increasing Efficiency through incorporating sensors

To increase the efficiency of HVAC systems, a system for detecting occupancy is needed to condition rooms appropriate to usage. Though there are several methods that are commonly used for detecting occupancy within modern buildings, these methods present limitations. Passive infrared (PIR) sensors, commonly used for controlling lighting, are a simple way of detecting if a room is occupied or not but do not give information regarding how many people occupy the room.

This information is necessary for CO2 ventilation. Using CO2 sensors directly for regulating CO2 is also unsuitable for conditioning strategies. CO2 buildup is slow, and by the time sensors detect high levels of CO2 that trigger ventilation, occupants of the room are likely to already feel uncomfortable  If not properly calibrated, these sensors can also be inaccurate. Electrical loads have also been used for occupancy estimation.

Hence, a good HVAC Consulting Company can help in saving money for its customers through the latest technology. MG Cooling Solutions is one such HVAC Company and can be reached at
