Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation
In today’s world Indoor Air Quality has become an essential factor as it has a direct effect on the health and well-being of its occupants. For the overall health and well-being of building occupants, it is essential that a building must be well ventilated and the inside air must be free of microorganisms (Virus, Bacteria & Fungi).
UVGI Technology (Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation) has been in application for so long for improving air quality as It improves occupant health, comfort, and productivity. Since the SARS outbreak the role of air-conditioning and ventilation, in preventing airborne infections has drawn extensive attention.
Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI) is an effective method of air and surface disinfection when integrated with the HVAC system of the building. It utilises ultraviolet (UV) light to deactivate the Virus by disrupting and destroying its DNA so they are unable to perform its vital cellular functions and ultimately gets killed.
With the prolonged usage of the HVAC system, fungus growth starts inside all corners and joints of the ducts, which subsequently becomes a breeding ground for different kinds of bacteria and viruses. The regular deposit of microorganisms in the ducts and on the surface of the coil of AHU should be cleaned for a healthier environment.
For the internal cleaning of the HVAC system, UVGI can be used as a safe alternative to manual or chemical cleaning. As manual cleaning is unmanageable & inconvenient and may cause damage to the coils. Chemical cleaning leaves the chemical residues inside the ducts and coils of AHU which slowly come out in the form of minute droplets and vapors when the system is in running condition causing the occupants to inhale the same.
Ultra-violet (UV) energy destroys microorganisms (Viruses, Bacteria, Fungi, etc.) by attacking the DNA of the microorganism, it penetrates deep inside the cell membrane, breaking the DNA structure of the micro-organism and making it not reproduce any further. Hence, the UVGI system inhibits the growth of any sort of microorganisms inside the duct lining or on the coil surface for the health of building occupants.
Low-pressure mercury vapor lamps discharge about 95% of their energy at a wavelength of 253.7nm, which is close to the DNA absorption peak (260–265nm) which inactivates micro-organisms by disrupting the nucleic acids and proteins structures at the molecular level, making them incapable of reproducing. DNA ( Deoxyribonucleic acid ) is essential for the growth and replication of any viruses and other infectious microorganisms. UV lamps irradiate UV photons that can damage DNA in a variety of ways, resulting in the micro organism’s inability to replicate or is no longer capable of causing disease. The effectiveness of UVGI units primarily depends on the UV Dosage delivered to the micro-organism.
UVGI inactivates micro-organisms by damaging the structure of nucleic acids and proteins at the molecular level, making them incapable of reproducing. DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid) is critical for the growth of any viruses and other microorganisms. UV photons irradiated by UV lamps can damage DNA in a variety of ways, resulting in the organism’s inability to replicate or even its death. An organism that cannot reproduce is no longer capable of causing disease. UVGI effectiveness depends primarily on the UV Dosage delivered to the micro-organism.
The main components of the UVGI system are UV lamps, Parabolic Reflector, Ballast and alloy metal framing for holding the structure. The UV lamps are having a life span of 9000 hours to 12000 hours. The IP54 rated enclosure encloses the High-efficiency UV ballast to ensure that there is no damage to the control panel for the effective working of the system.
